Grand Bay, the ultimate spot for fantastic shopping, in the north of Mauritius is a leisure village. Visitors are catered for very well, with approximately forty hotels, plus lots of shopping, restaurants, bars and discos within easy reach. Grand Bay owes its popularity to the enchanting quality of its emerald waters and to its liveliness by day or by night.

The sun is all year round and even in the winter months the north remains warmer than the rest of the island.

Grand Bay is the very centre of tourism, a medley of colours and culture. Tourist can enjoy the numerous entertainments available there. Once, it had nothing going for it but beautiful beaches, emerald waters and a deep sheltered bay. This once sleepy village has now become the main tourist centre. The village has now everything for the tourist, from trendy boutiques to craft shops. There are a plenty of restaurants, night-clubs and discotheques. Accommodation varies from Hotels to self-catering bungalows.

Grand Bay is the only place in Mauritius where traditions and colours blend harmoniously together to create a cosmopolitan atmosphere. Even though the village has gone through consequent infrastructural development, it has kept its original aspect. On one side stands shopping centres, restaurants, bars and discos on the other side are the fishermen, fruit seller, coconut merchants and ‘marchand gateaux piments’. Explore the original life of the Mauritian and taste the tropical food. Mauritius produces a wide range of cane rum. It is very cheap and is a nice drink when mixed with cola and ice. Don't forget the coconut water with a dash of lime and a splash of local rum over ice.

Beaches

The northern coastline beyond Grand Bay has many delightful beaches: Pointe aux Piments, famous for its underwater scenery; Trou aux Biches, with its fringe of filaos (casuarina) and coconut palms. Pereybčre; this delightful little cove is midway on the coast road between Grand Bay and Cap Malheureux. The deep, clear water makes it one of the very best bathing places on the whole island. Recently renovated, La Cuvette beach is well worth a visit.Further up the coast, Choisy, one of the most popular beaches on the island, offering facilities for safe bathing, sailing, windsurfing and water-skiing; finally, the coastline curves into Grand Bay itself, the main centre for yachting, water-skiing, windsurfing and many other sports.

Sea Sports

Grand Bay is now the main centre for yachting, water-skiing, wind surfing and other water sports. Tourist can experience water-skiing, windsurfing, yachting, sailing, kayak, pedalo, glass bottom boat, scuba diving, snorkelling, aqua gym, deep-sea fishing and catamaran cruises. There are tours proposed to visit the small islets round the island such as Ile au cerfs, Ile aux Aigrettes, Ile Plate.
